Four rivers pump from Florida’s hydrologic heart in the Green Swamp. Like fingers on a hand, the Hillsborough, Withlacoochee, Ocklawaha and Peace rivers reach out to provide much of central Florida’s water supply. These watersheds' mosaic of natural systems—the cypress swamps, hardwood forests, marshes, pine flatwoods and sandhills—are home to plant communities that coexist with some of our most threatened species of wildlife.
At this year’s conference, you’ll get to know the flora of the Natural Heart of Florida, and help to celebrate preservation of these irreplaceable landscapes. Through sessions on current conservation issues, we will also think deeply about their future. The Society will continue to play a central role in Florida conservation, because we are the only organization dedicated specifically to the preservation, conservation and restoration of native plant communities. Attend the research sessions for a glimpse of the science behind our approach.
You’ll also enjoy the sessions in the Native Plants in Your Landscape track. Each features expert advice on the use of native plants, be it at home, in the community, or on the roadsides.
We haven’t forgot the fun. At the conference you are sure to meet new collaborators and get reacquainted with old friends. We’ll make it easy for you to get together.
The field trips are diverse, from paddling to pounding over tough terrain. Our socials are designed for conversation and wandering about. We are thrilled to introduce participants to Crystal Springs, yes, the source of Zephyrhills Spring Water. The beauty of these surroundings will inspire you. And of course, there will be lots of shopping: native plants, arts and crafts, and the fabulous silent auction.
Your hosts, the Suncoast and Hernando Chapters welcome you to the natural heart of Florida. We know you’ll have a wonderful time.
