This trip will take you by airboat into the Everglades. We will learn about the river of grass and view wildlife along the way. The trip will take you to several tree islands where we will wade through the water and look at the vegetation and learn how the Miccosukee lived in the Everglades. This is a special opportunity to understand the historical, cultural, faunal, and botanical richness of the Everglades and its tree islands with unusually knowledgable guides. Airboat pricing is significantly less than usual thanks to the family-operated business and Miccosukee Tribe.
Leader: Craig van der Heiden, Fish and Wildlife Director, Miccosukee Tribe, and former Chief Executive Officer of The Institute for Regional Conservation, with experience in many South Florida conservation issues.
Fee: $87 includes airboat for duration of field trip (about 4 hours). No refunds unless FNPS or the tribe cancels the trip due to an insufficient number—low pricing requires full boats—or other unforeseen conditions.
What to bring: You should wear long pants and shirts. Bring water, sunscrean, and bug repellent. Water depth varies based on recent weather, so wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty and wet. Strap your hats on for a wonderful time.
