Larval host to the monarch butterfly ( Danaus plexippus ), queen butterfly ( Danaus gilippus ) and soldier butterfly, ( Danaus eresimus ).  Despite its name, this is not the preferred larval host of the monarch.

Reported to attract hummingbirds.
